What you should do BEFORE, DURING ang AFTER the earthquake?
BEFORE
The key to effective disaster prevention planning;
1. Know the earthquake hazards in your area.
2. Follow structural design and engineering practices when constructing a house or building.
3. Evaluate the structural soundness of the buildings and houses; strengthen if necessary.
Prepare your homes, workplace or schools;
1. Strap or bolt heavy furniture/cabinets to the walls.
2. Breakable items, harmful chemicals and flammable material should be stored properly in the lowermost secured shelves.
3. Check the stability of hanging objects like ceiling fans and chandeliers.
4. Always turn off the gas tanks when not in use.
Familiarize yourself with the exit routes and places where fire extinguishers, first aid kits, alarms and communication facilities are located. Learn how to use them beforehand.
DURING
Stay calm.
When you are INSIDE a structurally sound building or home.... STAY HERE!
DO The "DUCK,COVER and HOLD".
1. If possible quickly open the door for exit.
2. Duck under a study desk or table, and hold on to it, or protect your head with your arm.
3. Stay away from the glass windows, shelves, cabinets and other heavy objects.
4. Beware of falling objects. Be alert and keep your eyes open.
Provide access to children, pregnant, elderly and person with disabilities during evaluation.
If you're OUTSIDE.... Move to an open area!
1. Stay away from trees,power lines, posts and concrete structures.
2. Move away from steep slope which may be affected by landslides.
3. If you're hear the shore and feel an earthquake, especially it it's too strong, move quickly to higher grounds. Tsunami (giant sea waves) might follow.
If you're in a MOVING VEHICLE STOP and get out! Do not attempt to cross bridges, overpasses, or flyovers which may have been damaged.
AFTER
Be prepared for aftershocks.
Once the shaking stops, take the fastest and safest way out of building.
1. Don't use elevators
2. Don't enter damaged buildings
3. Don't use telephone unless necessary
4. Don't panic
TO CHECK
1. Yourself and others for injuries
2. Water and electrical lines for damages
3. For spills of chemical, toxic and flammable materials
4. And control fires which may spread.
If you need to evacuate your residence. Leave a message stating where you are going and bring your emergency supply kit
Keep updated on disaster prevention instructions from battery operated radios.
